In 1976, a landmark blind tasting in Paris changed the course of wine history. Known as the Judgment of Paris, the event invited France’s leading wine experts to compare acclaimed French wines alongside emerging producers from California — a decision that would challenge long-held assumptions within the wine world.

Among the standout wines was the 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon from Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, which earned top honors and helped establish Napa Valley as a world-class wine region. The victory marked a turning point for California winemaking, elevating its reputation on the global stage and ushering in a new era of innovation and competition within the industry.

Located in Napa Valley’s renowned Stags Leap District, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars continues to craft elegant, balanced Cabernet Sauvignon that reflects the character and legacy of this celebrated terroir.
Marcus Notaro was named Winemaker at Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars in May 2013, bringing with him nearly two decades of experience crafting world-class Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines. Prior to joining Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, Marcus made red wines in Washington beginning in 1995 and, starting in 2003, at Col Solare — the prestigious Red Mountain winery partnership between Ste. Michelle Wine Estates and Marchesi Antinori of Italy.

Since 2003, Marcus has refined a Cabernet Sauvignon style that blends old-world tradition with new-world innovation, mirroring the philosophy long championed by Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars. His understanding of this signature style — defined by elegance and balance, ripeness and restraint — along with his ability to express both vineyard terroir and varietal character, makes him ideally suited to continue the winery’s celebrated legacy.

Marcus is drawn to the complexity of Cabernet Sauvignon, noting, “It can make a rich, powerful wine without being heavy while truly expressing where it was grown.” That passion ultimately led him to Napa Valley and Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, where he saw the opportunity to craft wines from a historic property. With several Napa Valley vintages now behind him, Marcus remains committed to expressing the unique character of the winery’s estate vineyards through wines that embody balance, complexity, richness, and elegance.

Marcus looks forward to each harvest at the iconic FAY and S.L.V. Estate Vineyards, where he continues to deepen his understanding of how Cabernet Sauvignon expresses itself across the property’s unique microclimates.

“Everything begins in the vineyard and then comes together in the cellar,” Marcus says. “You need to do what the vineyard and the vintage tell you.”

As winemaker at Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, Marcus oversees the entire winemaking process from grape to bottle, collaborating closely with vineyard managers and growers, directing winemaking programs, and leading blending trials. He also partners with Marchesi Antinori Chief Enologist Renzo Cotarella to evaluate final blends each vintage.

In July 2023, Marchesi Antinori — one of Italy’s oldest family-owned fine wine producers — became the sole owner of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, building upon a 16-year partnership with Ste. Michelle Wine Estates dedicated to preserving and advancing the winery’s legacy.
